Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin, hair-like needles into specific points on or under the skin. It is based on the theory that an essential energy called "Chi" or "Qi" (pronounced Chee) moves through the body in a complex network of pathways or meridians, and that illness results when Qi is blocked, altered, or out of balance. Activating or stimulating certain points in the meridians can correct the energy flow in the meridians restoring or optimizing health. Acupuncture supports the natural healing powers within the body, improves and maintains general health, is useful for pain management and helps those who are slow healers, to heal faster. Detoxification treatments have been proven to help those with chemical dependency problems.

Improving the energy flow through the meridians can be accomplished in other ways. Other methods include stimulation of the points with heat and herbs, (called moxibustion), a gentle electric current, light or deep pressure/massage (acupressure or Shiatsu) or even low frequency lasers. You may also be given herbal remedies to improve Qi flow.

There are many different styles of acupuncture which include Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc., all with slightlly different approaches, therapies and techniques. However all systems share the same goal, which is creating a harmony and balance of the body's natural energies.
